3D Art Project- Digital Self

Masters Studies end of year project for my Digital Art course. This is a re-edited version of the project I handed in a year ago, as it contained copywritten material at the time I submitted it.

This project was an exploration of the self through New Media art. The 3D materials used in this project were scanned with a 360 Kinect camera and the Skanect software. Composited and Animated in Marmoset then edited in Adobe Premiere.

Besides my 3D elements I have used various royalty free elements and audio from the internet with the aim of invoking a vaporwave aesthetic. The "vaporwave" style was chosen for several reasons; This musical genre and the visual style associated with it started and was distributed almost exclusively online, the songs and images being created by self-taught artists, based almost exclusively on sampling, collage and appropriation the elements of 80s pop culture. Thus, I found this style fitting for the theme of creating a digital "alter-ego"

I chose to use 3D Scans in order to address the topic of "creating a digital alter-ego" in the most literal way possible. Once this representation of mine is recreated in the virtual space, it can be viewed from any angle, like the statues present in vaporwave music videos. Furthermore, this reinforces the idea of a curated representation of the self that represents us in the virtual space.
